Lizard Squad Now Targeting Tor and Defying Warnings

It seems that the people behind Lizard Squad have ceased targeting their DDoS attacks on Xbox and PlayStation and they have now moved on to focusing on Tor. The fear expressed by Tor a week ago was not without solid ground, as it has turned out. Anonymous warning Lizard Squad to stay away was proven insufficient.

If you recall the blog post published by the Tor on 19th December as to the threats that the Network could be facing, this comes as no surprise. In fact, this specific post referred to possible upcoming attempts to disable the Tor Network and so this attack has just realized what was feared of. The group of Anonymous has already declared war on Lizard Squad due to the recent events with the gaming consoles on Christmas. Those threats have been taken care of thanks to Kim Dotcom and to this date Tor threats have been dealt with effectively.

From Tor Project, an announcement has been published on time and this announcement has stated the fact that there is still no reason why somebody would lose sleep over the alleged attacks from Lizard Squad to Tor. Nevertheless, the proper precautions are still taken, in avoidance of any deterioration of the current situation. It is far better to be safe than sorry, after all. The relays that have been signed up are now under control and there is substantial mitigation of any harm potential.

“This looks like a regular attempt at a Sybil attack: the attackers have signed up many new relays in hopes of becoming a large fraction of the network. But even though they are running thousands of new relays, their relays currently make up less than 1% of the Tor network by capacity. We are working now to remove these relays from the network before they become a threat, and we don’t expect any anonymity or performance effects based on what we’ve seen so far,” was what the Tor Project specifically announced on the issue.

It is worth reminding that the personal information of many of the Lizard Squad members has been released – meaning that they have been doxed. However, this does not seem to have affected the attitude and targeting of the group up till now! Let’s see how this digital war is shaped in the near future and which alliances will emerge…
