Google Project Zero is the elite, high-tech team of the prestigious company that has united hackers and security masters toward locating vulnerabilities in the existing OS and apps. You can have a look at their work on their blog, with their latest breakthroughs. After having disclosed vulnerabilities of Microsoft and its software earlier in 2015, now the team has focused on Apple OS X. According to the reports from Google Project Zero, there are three vulnerabilities in Apple OS X that require immediate fix.
However, Apple is not likely to respond to the revelations of Google. Based on what is clearly stated at the product security page of Apple: “For the protection of our customers, Apple does not disclose, discuss or confirm security issues until a full investigation has occurred and any necessary patches or releases are available. Apple usually distributes information about security issues in its products through this site and the mailing list below.”
According to standard procedure, Google Project Zero notifies the companies that have been found with vulnerabilities in their software and then offers them time to either fix the issue or disclose it in public, for the common good. Grace period stretches up to 90 days from the notification of each company. Nevertheless, Microsoft expressed its discontent about the way Google has handled things. In fact, there was a calling for working together on securing the web on behalf of Microsoft.
Now I personally believe, the recent events have brought to light the need to enhance web security and optimize web experience. There is a debate as to whether or not the tactics of Google Project Zero are fruitful and whether or not they will be proven beneficial to the Internet.
On the one hand, there is the opinion that the companies should work silently and not reveal the vulnerabilities of each company; this would jeopardize the integrity, credibility and of course the quality of services provided on behalf of each of the companies. On the other hand, it is worth considering the fact that every effort aiming to better the overall security of the Internet is well-practiced.
Having that in mind, nobody can argue that companies will now be on constant alert and will even try to improve their effectiveness and security layering. With the contribution of a sleepless eye monitoring them non-stop, there is no room for mistakes and misjudgments. So overall, the necessity of an elite and highly competent team such as Google Project Zero, is indisputable!
