Raptr Hacked and Users are Advised to Reset their Passwords

After Xbox and Sony, now it is time for Raptr (popular video game themed social networking website) to come in terms with the latest hacking incident with the potential loss of users’ personal information. The prompt security update on behalf of its CEO and founder, Dennis Fong, confirmed the attack and gave clear instructions to the users of the site.

Raptr is a popular video-gaming site enabling players to socialize, keep up with their game time and discuss about questions or complaints they have regarding game levels and so on. This site has been hacked, according to the urgent statement of the founder and CEO of Raptr, Dennis Fong. He was prompt to inform users on the latest news, as well as advise them to proceed with reset of passwords.

“Maintaining the highest level of security around your Raptr account information is of the utmost importance to us, so we’re very sorry to inform you that some Raptr user data may have been recently compromised in an attack similar to hacking activities that have targeted other high-profile sites and services such as Xbox Live and Sony’s PlayStation Network.” Of course, we all remember the attacks targeting Xbox and Sony right before Christmas. Collection of sensitive data has been an issue troubling the web for some time, now – with Raptr being the latest incident that should raise an eyebrow.

Dennis Fong made it clear that it is yet unknown which data has been compromised, though he was clear that any points collected by you till now will be ensured: “User names, email addresses, password hashes, and some first and last names may have been accessed. This means that although the passwords are hashed, users with weak passwords are vulnerable to unauthorized access. It’s important to note that our two-factor authentication system used for redeeming Raptr Reward Points ensures that even if your Raptr account was among those compromised, the points you’ve earned as a Raptr member are protected.”

At the end of his announcement, the man behind Raptr suggested that all the users of the site should reset their passwords and do the same with other passwords in other websites (should they use the same login information). Apparently, this is a no-no concerning Internet security as a whole, but unfortunately there are people who use the same login info for more than enough different accounts.

Fong reassures users that the risk is minimal, but it is better for someone to be safe than sorry. There is a direct link in the last paragraph of the security update that redirects users to the reset password option for facilitating the whole process for them: “Reset your password at your earliest convenience in order to help safeguard your Raptr account. In doing so, we strongly advise you to use a password that is reasonably complex and not associated with another site/service account.”
