Watching Netflix in the Philippines, 3 Easy Methods

Netflix is an on-demand video streaming service with a great number of subscribers, because of its high quality content and the great versatility being offered. However, there is a problem with people residing outside the United States; the original version of Netflix is only available for viewing within the US, leaving everyone else making do either with another limited version of Netflix or without any Netflix at all.

Of course, they have expressed their will to expand their global network and so far they have made it to Latin America, Canada and the UK. Still, what happens with the other countries and with the people who live there and who wish to access geographically restricted content? What happens with the Asian countries, such as Philippines? Can someone watch Netflix in Philippines or not?

Well, normally this question would not get a positive answer and even all the tourists from the US travelling abroad (even if they own a Netflix account back in the US) would have to settle for no Netflix throughout their vacation time. The same would happen to US expats who have relocated due to change in their career or after their retirement, as well as students or businessmen on meetings taking place in Philippines. But here, we have found all you need to know towards accessing Netflix from Philippines and practically anywhere else!

Why is Netflix Restricted in Philippines?

First of all, it is worth fully comprehending why Netflix is among the geographically restricted websites and video on-demand services. It is true that the film industry has been harmed by torrent downloading and free access to copyrighted content. This is why all the major studios and the producing companies have made it pretty clear that they ought to stop bleeding moving forward.

As a result, the services that offer such content are not freely accessible to all countries in the world; on the contrary, there are copyright conflicts that either allow or prevent specific content. This is why the United States is the only place where you can actually enjoy the full content of Netflix.

The fundamental issue that you need to take care of is the origin of your IP address. If you are located in Philippines, then this is the origin of your IP. However, there are ways that you can use for appearing to be located somewhere else and specifically in the United States.

Now, let us have a closer look at the different methods that you can use to unblock US Netflix despite the fact that you currently are somewhere in Philippines:

Using VPN

One of the most popular methods for accessing Netflix anywhere (not just in Philippines) is that of VPN. VPN is actually a Virtual Private Network. It acts as an intermediary, masking your IP address and giving you a brand new one from the US. The VPN has got a large number of different, remote servers located in various parts of the world. So, according to your needs you will have to choose an American IP address deriving from an America-located server. Here are the steps that you will have to follow, in order to access Netflix from the Philippines:

  • Choose one among the best VPN service providers, based on several factors that add to the most wonderful user experience. There are VPN plans covering all kinds of needs at an affordable cost.
  • Log in and select a US based remote server. This is your ticket to appearing from the United States through a brand new IP address.
  • Visit Netflix website and start the sign-up process, assuming that you do not already have a Netflix account.

Of course, VPN does not only provide you with a new IP address; perhaps the most important benefit that you will get from the use of a VPN is that of data encryption. In this way, you will be able to leave no room for revealing your online presence to anyone; even the most sophisticated hackers will not be able to track you down thanks to data encryption.

Using DNS Proxy

Netflix can be enjoyed in Philippines also through the use of another method, that is a DNS proxy. Like a VPN, the DNS proxy changes your IP completely and redirects all your traffic. However, it doesn’t make your Internet traffic travel through secure tunnels (encryption) as VPNs do. Instead, it connects you directly to Netflix (practically any supported website you want to connect with) and thus it remains fast and effective. Let’s see which steps you ought to take in this case for getting the desired result:

  • You select a quality DNS service provider, based on its trustworthiness and some other features that it gets to offer you without a high price.
  • You complete the configuration of your device manually, so as to be able and use the DNS service provider to your benefit.
  • You change the DNS server to a US based one.
  • You login to Netflix website or you initiate the sign-up process.

The worst disadvantage of DNS proxy is the lack of data encryption. This is what keeps its speed faster, but the speed does not compensate you for the security risks that can emerge.

Using Tor

The third method that you can use is that of Tor. This is offered absolutely for free and it helps you to remain anonymous and access geo-restricted sites like Netflix without much effort. The Onion Router will not protect your whole traffic, so it is more like the DNS proxy and less like a VPN. Behold the steps that need to be covered for accessing Netflix with Tor:

  • Proceed with the installation of the Tor browser.
  • Set the entry and exit nodes to the USA, as this location will meet your needs.
  • Visit the Netflix website and start the process of signing up (or if you already have an account, use that).

Which Is the Best Solution for You?

We have outlined three different methods that will lead you to the same effects, informing you on how to watch Netflix right from the Philippine sand. Nevertheless, not all of these methods are equally valuable and can help you out with your online protection as a whole (while unblocking Netflix and all the rest geo-restricted websites). It is all a matter of prioritizing, of course. If protection is what matters to you the most, the data encryption that is offered via Philippines VPN is of the essence and should be your number one option.

If on the other hand you worry more about the price or you want to compromise nothing in terms of speed, you should not look elsewhere and go for Netflix proxy or Tor. Either way, feel free to experiment with the method that you choose for getting to unblock and enjoy Netflix now. You should settle for nothing less than that!

Note: If you get a message like “You seem to be using an unblocker or proxy…” after changing your IP, worry not, simply head to our Netflix proxy error fix guide.

Hi, Nice read! Thanks for sharing. I was wondering if you have any thoughts on accessing Netflix through Smart TVs in the Philippines. I have a Sony Android Smart TV W800C and would like to access netflix through it as well.

Might as well forget it since Netflix has been keen to VPNs and proxies since about Nov 2015. They not only block those members accessing via one of those, but also require the Silverlight extension…just in case you try to access via the Tor browser.

Thank you for the heads up Rob, it will help other users for sure. But Netflix proxy/VPN block is already noted in article and users are advised to go through our guide here https://securitygladiators.com/2016/03/02/netflix-proxy-error-fix/ for a fix to that issue. Many thanks!

Yep–saw it. It helps. As Netflix tries to block us, we will continue to find ways. Right now, I’m finally catching up on Daredaveil season 2 as I write this 😉
