Astrill VPN Review

Astrill was launched back in 2009 and is registered in Seychelles. They claim to be the leaders in the VPN industry, with their network spreading in the US and the European countries pretty fast. According to their official website and their own company info, they have got 202 VPN servers located in 55 countries and they are constantly expanding. The last line of their about us page was truly intriguing, stating the following: “Astrill is founded by young and ambitious team who saw the opportunity to take over the VPN market”. This is definitely promising and therefore we were motivated to proceed with a full Astrill VPN review. This is the best way for us to determine whether or not the opportunity that had been seen by the ambitious team behind Astrill reaped any fruits.

Note: According to our tests, this VPN provider is not at the same standard as the industry leader IPVanish.

As we have stated above, Astrill VPN prides itself in offering the most impressive, fastest VPN service on the market. We do not know if this is true, but it is certainly dead-fast! Whenever we experimented during our free trial with the servers of Astrill VPN, the result was impressive. It is equally important to outline that the speed remained intact, no matter what OS and device was used at a time. That being said, it is fair to say that in the field of consistency there have been some issues from time to time. This can possibly lead to the deterioration of user experience, as changing between servers can be time-consuming and irritating.

Astrill VPN Prices
Moving forward with the thorough Astrill VPN review, it is high time we had a closer look at the cost of such service. First of all, it is important to highlight the fact that there is a minimum of three months’ subscription available for you to pay for. No monthly plans are offered. The quarterly subscription costs $29.95, which brings the monthly cost lower than $10.00. Six months’ subscription is offered at $39.95, while there is an annual plan that you can purchase for $69.95.

A free trial is a great way for you to see whether or not the service of Astrill VPN suits you and can be extended up to 7 days. Still, on the downside we have to say that there is no money refund guarantee offered. Another issue that needs to be taken into consideration is the cost of add-ons, which can result in rather expensive fee for you to pay.

Astrill VPN surely takes security seriously and this is why all the advanced security protocols are supported by its services. As you can see at the respective setup manual, OpenWeb, Open VPN, PPTP, L2TP, Cisco IPSec, L2TP/IPSec, SSTP and IKEv2 are all provided to the subscribers of Astrill VPN. Furthermore, there are some truly wonderful and exceptionally helpful add-ons that add to your overall security. The add-ons can be found here and include NAT Firewall, Stealth VPN, Private IPs and a lot more.

Customer Support

Astrill VPN Support
This is an ambiguous aspect of Astrill VPN, as we have come to understand from the innumerable Astrill VPN reviews that we have read through online. Let’s take things one at a time; from their pricing page, Astrill VPN highlights the support options as “Wiki, Support Ticket, Live Chat, and Remote Desktop Assistance”. There is a live chat that appears at every web page of Astrill VPN site.

This is encouraging, by all means. Still, the response time could be a bit better. We have wandered through the knowledgebase of the VPN we have gazed through their blog (featuring news and updates). You can submit a ticket, if you feel like it. The language supported is limited to English, which is something that somebody would expect.

For support, you can also call them on Skype or directly via the phone; there are setup guides and social media platforms with rather vibrant presence. Overall, there is flexibility in the support options that you get – with the responsiveness being less impressive than everything else about Astrill VPN.

Astrill VPN Servers
At Astrill VPN, they focus on maintaining a great level of privacy and anonymity through the use of a plethora of servers located internationally. To this date, they boast having 202 VPN servers located everywhere in the world (in 55 different countries) and this leads to the amazing number of 87,462 IPs. These servers are continuously expanding and they utilize all the advanced security protocols that we have mentioned earlier. If you wish to find out more about the locations of the servers, you can check the page that analyzes all the countries’ locations where the VPN servers can be found.

Astrill VPN Compatibility
No problem emerges with compatibility and Astrill VPN. Indeed, you can rest assured that you will face no actual problem when using the VPN service in any OS or device. The detailed list of the compatible platforms and devices includes Windows, Mac OSX, Linux, iPhone, iPad iPod Touch, Android, Routers (DD-WRT, Tomato/TomatoUSB, Asus Merlin/RMerl/ASUSWRT-Merlin firmware), Synology NAS, Chrome OS (Chromium), as well as any other platform that supports VPN protocols. In addition, you can find setup guides that lead you step by step towards installing the VPN and making use of its benefits.

Payment Options

Although we have highlighted our discontent as to the fact that the sign-up process forces you to use your mobile phone and send your number for receiving a message (a verifying code), the payment methods compensate you for your trouble. Bitcoins are allowed as a payment option, along with PayPal and all the credit and debit cards, bank wire transfers and Ali Pay. There is unique versatility in what you can choose.

Pros in a nutshell:

  • SSL 256 bit data encryption
  • 2 simultaneous connections
  • Free trial available
  • Bitcoin and many other payment methods

Cons in a nutshell:

  • No monthly subscription offered
  • Customer support is ambiguous
  • Add-ons brings the cost higher
  • No money-refund guarantee

Bottom Line

We have come to the end of our Astrill VPN review and we have thought it best to summarize both their weaknesses and strongest points. Overall, this is a great VPN service provider that gradually expands its network and does its best toward providing a wide range of special features and add-ons. Unfortunately, they come at an extra cost and this can be frustrating (not to mention costly).

Among the best points of Astrill VPN, we have outlined its fast speed and its advanced encryption tools and other features. There is a free trial for you to use and there is clearly no log kept whatsoever. As disadvantages, many points have been lost with the use of a mobile phone number (in order to send a code and be able to complete the sign-up process).

Additionally, there are some complaints as to the prompt character of their customer support. Generally speaking, Astrill VPN is a trustworthy VPN service provider that offers great solutions for unblocking sites and staying off the radar, avoiding surveillance and eliminating hacking threats.

Review Summary
Astrill VPN offers superb data encryption and some amazing extra features, while maintaining a relatively fast speed and solid consistency. 1. I find astrill to be very good, and the rating from this post is a bit low.

They do charge money for addons, but if you don’t purchase the addons, it is still better then your average vpn service, who charge a higher price.

They have been the fastest provider for me. Totally recommend.

  2. I believe Astrill is still the best especially in China. It is more reliable than the others. I had Expressvpn before and it was never this good!
