Now it’s crystal clear that he daily use of internet requires an online protection, so the user could be saved from the online oppression. A VPN service uses a set of procedures which is called a “VPN (or Virtual Private Network) Protocol”.
The restriction and strong encryption a VPN uses including a private data access, makes the misuse of the online data by the other online users very hard. There are many types of protocols used in VPNs for home as well as business networks, each of them containing it’s own advantages and disadvantages.
Types of VPN Protocols
Most common are OpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP, Site-to-Site VPN, SSL. Below, you’ll be able to know about each one in a bit more detail.
This VPN Protocol is free to be installed and run. It is published under the GNU license, and it is an open source Protocol. The high level of security is provided by the use security keys, password-based authentication as well as the use of OpenSSL Encryption.
The advantages of the use of OpenVPN Protocol are first of all the Great Worldwide Community Support, the Strong Security it provides and the High Reliability it offers.
The greatest disadvantage is it’s complexity. Among this are many overheads are running this Protocol, which means the latencies are depending on the access, situation and the location. Open Protocol can run over UDP and TCP/ IP network Protocols.
Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol is the most widely used VPN Protocols among Windows users. Advantage of this Protocol is faster compared to other VPN Protocols and it can be used by Mac and Linux users. It was created my Microsoft in collaboration with other technology companies.
The greatest disadvantage is the necessity of security measures implement. Furthermore there is the disability of providing encryption.
Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol was developed as a combination between PPTP and Layer to Forwarding Protocol, by the cooperation between Cisco and Microsoft. The advantage is the provision of data confidentiality as well as data integrity, that means near-perfect accuracy in data transmission.
Same as PPTP Protocol, the encryption is relied on the PPP Protocol to be done because is not provided by itself.
This Protocol is much alike the PPTP VPN, with some differences which makes it unique. Big advantage is that it enables the connection between different sites of a same organization with it’s own real network to be connected to form A VPN connection.
Biggest disadvantage and main difference between the PPTP and this VPN protocol is the the hardware-based and software-based routing, which encryption and decryption could be done by the routers on both ends.
SSL (Secure Socked Layer) VPN
VPN which can be reached over web browser, accessible via https instead of http. It’s main advantage is that it does not require any necessity of software installation, so the web browser is used as a client application. The main disadvantage is the restriction of the user’s access to specific applications.
Which One To Use
The decision which one to be used is not simple. It depends on the cost, the number of users, security and bandwidth. OpenVPN is mostly recommended to be used among this group of Virtual Private Network protocols, but in case it is not available PPTP and L2TP are solid backup options. For individual users PPTP offer the best deal.
