The Complete LiquidVPN Review to Read Right Now

LiquidVPN can become one of the premium VPN services out there in the market. Read on to find out more.

LiquidVPN was launched in 2013 by a guy named Dave Cox. Dave Cox had spent over 15 years as an employee in software companies and data centers in the United States of America.

And from there he was inspired to go on a personal journey and give the world a better internet in terms of privacy and anonymity.

His solution was a VPN service that was better than the rest of the competition. In other words, Dave Cox came up with LiquidVPN which, though not the most popular, is certainly a VPN service that merits attention from all users who are concerned about their identity in the online world.

LiquidVPN, for all its faults, is a decent option for users who are particularly worried about their online security in a world that is experiencing an unprecedented amount of surveillance from government organizations and other non-state spying agencies.

This VPN service has all the standard features that you would normally expect from a good VPN service. Additionally, LiquidVPN has some extra security functions that provide users with an supplementary layer of anonymity.

Unlike some of the other major players in the VPN service industry, LiquidVPN is a relatively small one. As a result, it doesn’t have the widest array of networks for its servers. Even with that disadvantage, it is able to stack up rather well against the rest of the field in terms of features, performance, and design.

Note: According to our tests, this VPN provider is not at the same standard as the industry leader IPVanish.

LiquidVPN Price

LiquidVPN currently has three different subscription plans for new users. You have the Sidekick plan, the Road Warrior plan, and the Ultimate plan.

While that might sound a bit overly complex to you, all you need to know is that the only difference between the three plans (other than the actual price of course) is the number of devices you can protect with LiquidVPN.

In other words, the better plan you have, the more number of devices you can connect to the VPN service at the same time.

If you want to sign up for the lowest plan, that is the SideKick plan, then that will cost you around $7 a month. That is if you want to pay LiquidVPN on a monthly basis. If you sign up for a year in the beginning, then you will only have to pay around $4.75 per month for 12 months straight.

Additionally, if you go the one year plan then you will also get two additional simultaneously connected devices.

The next plan in line is the Road Warrior plan and this allows users to connect up to four devices simultaneously via the VPN service for $10 per month. If you sign up for a full year then you only have to pay $5.75 per month (of course, you’ll have to pay the whole one-year amount lump sum).

The third plan that LiquidVPN offers to its potential customers is the Ultimate plan.

As indicated before, all the plans are the same except for duration and number of simultaneously connected devices. The Ultimate plan offers a mammoth eight simultaneous devices. You don’t need us telling you that this plan if probably best suited to those who want to buy the subscription with friends or other family members. The Ultimate plan will cost you about $18 per month and you can subscribe to the yearly package for just $8.83 per month.

As you can probably see for yourself, LiquidVPN is not the cheapest VPN service in the market. But it is definitely cheaper than the average VPN service that one can subscribe to at the moment. So if you’re on a tight budget then it’s best if you sign up for LiquidVPN.

Payment methods include:

  • Credit cards
  • PayPal
  • Cash
  • Bitcoin
  • Litecoin
  • Peercoin
  • Darkcoin
  • Dogecoin
  • Vertcoin
  • Xcurrency
  • BitcoinDark

Basically, you can pay up for LiquidVPN using a lot of cryptocurrencies.

If you don’t feel confident committing to LiquidVPN just yet, then the VPN service also offers a seven-day money back guarantee once you subscribe to a package.

In other words, LiquidVPN like most other modern VPN services does not offer a free trial option for new users.

LiquidVPN Features

Why should one opt for LiquidVPN among the myriad of other VPN services?

Well, among many other features, there are two major features that allow LiquidVPN to stand out from the crowd.

The first of those features is the ability of the VPN service to provide its customers three different types of IP addresses. Yes, you read that right, you can opt from a total of three types of IP addresses.

Most VPN service providers only offer shared IP addresses and to be fair to those VPN services, it is true that most online users only make use of shared IP addresses. Shared IP addresses have become pretty much the norm in the VPN service industry.

Shared IPs have the added advantage of offering the fastest download times for users and hence are most suited to users who engage in a lot of streaming and torrent downloading.

When you sign up for the service, you are given an IP address that is also used by a dozen, other users. In fact, during heavy usage that “dozen user” number reaches up into early hundreds and you might think that’s a bad thing, but it is not.
More users usually mean that you have an added layer of anonymity as far as your identity on the internet is concerned.

The second type of IP address is the static IP address. In other words, a VPN service that offers this kind of IP address, provides each user with a unique IP address and hence it remains unchanged as long as you pay the dues of course.

The static IP address, sometimes, is also called a dedicated IP address. The static IP address is most suitable for those users who use a lot of apps and websites that are considered to be IP sensitive including gaming websites and online banking ones.

If a website asks you for your location and wants to verify your identity as a result of an unidentified device then it happens because of your changed IP address. This happens only when you signed in to the service using a different IP address previously.

The third type of IP address is the modulating IP address and this is LiquidVPN’s trump card.

Let’s have a look at what modulating IP address means as far as the end-user is concerned.

Essentially, whenever you connect to a particular web server, your current IP address gets changed to another shared IP address.

Hence, the web page forms the connection with several different IP addresses and as a result, is unable to locate your position accurately as it would with a user that has a single IP address.

You might have figured it out already that the modulating IP address is the most secure form of IP address as it makes it very difficult for marketing agencies and various other online trackers to determine your position and identity.

The modulating IP address is best suited to those who seek to have the highest level of protection and anonymity.

There are a limitless number of VPN services available on the internet but so far, in our endeavors, we haven’t come across a single VPN service that offers a modulating IP address.

The other unique LiquidVPN feature is the Liquid Lock. This feature is only available for Windows and Mac desktop users.

LiquidVPN’s Liquid Lock is basically a firewall and a connection kill switch combined into one feature.

When this feature is turned on, all internet traffic is stopped if your internet connection to the VPN server is unstable or gets dropped.

As a result of this feature, your real IP address is still protected even with a dropped VPN connection and hence websites cannot ascertain your real IP address. This also blocks your internet service provider from spying on you because your traffic is encrypted when the connection is stable and stopped when the VPN connection is dropped.

LiquidVPN claims that its Liquid Lock feature also comes in handy to guard against WebRTC and DNS leaks.

The Liquid Lock feature from Liquid VPN does a great job of completely cutting off your devices from your internet connection and only allowing traffic to flow between LiquidVPN servers. This feature also allows users to whitelist their trusted IP addresses and enable LAN traffic from the settings menu.

Moreover, LiquidVPN is one of the handful of VPN services that operates and manages its own DNS servers and automatically connects users to the online world through its secure servers. With that said, this VPN service also facilitates users to specify custom DNS server addresses through the settings menu.

LiquidVPN Compatible Devices

LiquidVPN provides support for a variety of operating systems including Windows, Mac, Android and the iOS. In other words, this VPN service is compatible with all the major operating systems.

Though it has to be mentioned that LiquidVPN does not natively support Linux and other lesser known operating systems so users will have to use a third-party VPN application to connect to LiquidVPN servers.

Can You Watch Netflix With LiquidVPN?

The short answer is, Yes. The long answer is that many users have reported that they were able to connect to the American version of Netflix by using LiquidVPN from outside the United States of America.

LiquidVPN helps users to watch shows that are region locked and is able to bypass a disease that has infected many of VPN services, the Netflix Proxy error disease. In other words, LiquidVPN fully supports United States Netflix.

LiquidVPN Interface and Setup

The setup for LiquidVPN is pretty straightforward and simple. Just download the package from the official website and then install it on your machine.

Do we really need to tell you that there is a third step too, which is to log in after you have installed the application both on your desktop and mobile?

Really, the installation process is that intuitive.

On a serious note though, make sure you use the correct password along with your username when logging in the VPN app. You might have one password for the actual website and another for LiquidVPN app.

Some users who have been using a VPN service for a longer period than they care to remember, may install the LiquidVPN app and think to themselves that the interface looks remarkably familiar to some of the other premium VPN services.

Well, we’ll tell you that LiquidVPN has done that on purpose. And the other VPN service that LiquidVPN has tried to copy is probably VyperVPN app. Of course, LiquidVPN has changed the interface to some extent by introducing some minor tweaks and a different color/icon theme but the overall look feels the same.

This could be because both these VPN services hired the same designers or just happen to get along with each other really well so to copy each other.

But that shouldn’t bother anyone since it’s mostly about aesthetics and not much else. LiquidVPN’s interface is very intuitive and offers a great number of options to new users in order to customize their experience of the app.

LiquidVPN app’s main page shows users their IP address along with VPN protocol, connection time and topology.

What is topology you might ask?

It is basically a term that is used to describe all the various types of different IP addresses such as shared, static and modulating.

To connect to a server, the user has to click the location pin which is present to the right of the connect button. This also brings up a new screen which will allow users to select their desired server. Users can also sort servers by latency (in other words ping time) actual location on a map.

On the top of the screen, users are also allowed to filter servers by topology, region, and protocol.

You can also, somewhat, bookmark your favorite server to save time the next time you perform a server search.

Users can access more settings via the cog button that is located on the top of the screen. This cog icon also opens up other options such as support and feedback. If you want to avail customer support, you can do that by submitting a help ticket from within the app itself.

There are also other startup options available along with Liquid Lock whitelist, DNS management, and OpenVPN protocol.

When not in use, the LiquidVPN app can be minimized to the tray. If you right click the LiquidVPN app icon you’ll be given three options: Show, connect and Quit.

The only downside of the whole LiquidVPN app menu is the lack of a back button on the server select screen to go back to the main screen.

As indicated earlier, the mobile version of LiquidVPN app almost resembles the desktop version. The only difference is that there is not Liquid Lock on the mobile app for iOS and Android.

LiquidVPN Servers

LiquidVPN runs around 40 servers that are spread in nine countries. Though the number of servers is pretty impressive, the choice of countries is not. In fact, if you take out Singapore, LiquidVPN only offers VPN servers in Europe and North America.

In other words, LiquidVPN can’t connect you to VPN servers that are located in South America, the major part of Asia, Africa or Australia.

As mentioned earlier, users can select servers based on protocol and topology. But what we didn’t tell you was that users can also select a server based on the way they want to use the server.

To put it another way, there are some servers which are optimized for P2P transfers which help users in downloading torrents quickly. Then there are the DDos-protected servers which are used by users who can reliable connections rather than max speed.

But to find out which server is which, you’ll have to visit the official website of LiquidVPN since information regarding this matter is not available in the app.

Moreover, LiquidVPN has Tier 3 data centers that manage the company’s entire network through a lease agreement. There are also Tier 4 data centers which offer better uptime.

What this means for the end users is that LiquidVPN has no ownership of its own servers or the data centers.

Of course, a lot of other VPN service do the exact same thing. So for users who want watertight privacy security, perhaps LiquidVPN isn’t the best candidate for their ideal VPN service.

The benefit of renting out data servers is that, the reliability of the VPN service goes up by a notch or two, so you have to keep that in mind as well when comparing LiquidVPN with other VPN services.

In terms of speed, LiquidVPN can compete with some of the best VPN services in the market. Though the quality of speeds varies quite a bit over a long period of time, it does give reasonable ping times and download speeds on most occasions.

In other words, there should be no discernible difference in downloading speeds with or without LiquidVPN as far as users internet connection is concerned.

LiquidVPN Help And Support

As has become the norm with almost all VPN services, LiquidVPN too handles customer queries through the use of a simple ticket submission system.

To file a complaint or a question, users are required to submit a ticket either by using the app or via email.

Those looking for phone support or live chat feature will not find any candy here.

One other positive aspect of LiquidVPN is that LiquidVPN does not put up advertisements on its official website. LiquidVPN app also does not have any ads, except the ones related to LiquidVPN’s own products.

As of now, no complaints have been heard about LiquidVPN sending unsolicited emails to its customers.

LiquidVPN Protocols

If you sign up for LiquidVPN, your default connection protocol would be OpenVPN. OpenVPN has become the most used connection protocol in the past few years and this is exactly the one you should use.

LiquidVPN offers OpenVPN over TCP as well as UDP. It also offers OpenVPN over L2TP/IPSec, SSTP, and PPTP.

You have the option of select their desired port from ten different options. This is especially useful for users who like to engage in a lot of port forwarding activities.

And since LiquidVPN is a not scam VPN service, it also provides any subscriber with unlimited bandwidth along with unlimited server switches and port switches.

In fact, LiquidVPN doesn’t even restrict P2P file sharing and BitTorrent activity.

LiquidVPN uses a 256-bit AES encryption method for all its OpenVPN connections. That allows LiquidVPN to rub shoulders with the best in the business.

Aside from strong encryptions levels, LiquidVPN also facilitates users by utilizing flawless forward secrecy methods.

What is forward secrecy?

Forward secrecy basically secures a user’s past sessions again any future compromises in terms of cracked passwords and stolen secret keys.

LiquidVPN systems generate a new private key for each new session and shun the old method of having a master key which hackers could exploit to decrypt and then again access to all past and current traffic.

Since LiquidVPN aims to become the top performing VPN service in the industry, it does not keep any logs. LiquidVPN has a zero log policy and collects a minimal amount of metadata logs.

Metadata logs are just dumps of information about your last VPN with which you logged in along with your total number of logins and the amount of bandwidth used by your connection.

For what it’s worth, LiquidVPN does not keep any IP addresses or timestamps.

LiquidVPN does suffer from a rather serious problem. That problem is that the company in based in the United States of America and that means LiquidVPN is subject to US laws.

In other words, the company will give up information it has stored on its users if it is forced by government agencies through the use of a warrant or a subpoena.

To somewhat guard against exposing its users, LiquidVPN has a warrant notifier on its website. It is updated on a weekly basis and if you are unable to see the warrant notifier on the official website then that means law enforcement agencies have served LiquidVPN a warrant to give up information on its users.

Should You Buy LiquidVPN?

If we compare LiquidVPN in terms of value for money, then there is little doubt that LiquidVPN has some pretty exceptional packages given that the company is a new member of the VPN service provider community.

LiquidVPN’s security features along with the facility to use modulating UP address and fast download speeds makes LiquidVPN an ideal choice for users who are looking for something different and refreshing.

LiquidVPN apps are also well built and easy to get accustomed to. LiquidVPN customer support program isn’t anything to brag about but some customers were able to get their questions answered fairly quickly.

LiquidVPN’s real drawbacks are that it has a limited selection of server location and is based in the United States of America which means that users could get investigated by agencies such as the NSA or CIA.
