When it comes to VPN performance, it is not that hard.
Of course, that does not mean it is simple.

What would cause that increased speed?
In all probability, the increased speed would be the direct result of the VPN service making use of high-speed and low-latency connections.
Going back to our City Business example, it would be like the businessman shipped his/her goods from City C to City B via a fast bullet train as opposed to the slower freight train.
Our research shows that, at least on the iPhone, only a single VPN service managed to increase download speeds by increasing the speed of the connection.
However, that does not mean that the rest of the VPN service providers were poor.
They actually managed to NOT decreased download speed by a huge amount.
For a VPN service, that is an achievement in itself.
In the VPN world, if a VPN service provider does not slow things down than that is as good as a VPN service that speeds things up (of course, the latter VPN is more preferable)
The best way to test for VPN performance on a mobile device is to first disable all cellular sims and data networks.
In order to do that, all that the user has to do is to put his/her smartphone device in airplane mode.
After that, the user should enable the device’s WiFi capabilities.
There is no point in measuring VPN connection speed on a cellular connection because cellular connections are not stable.
Perhaps that is the reason why hackers find cellular networks more difficult to hack than WiFi networks.

Any decrease of the connection’s download speed would draw the user’s attention even if the user is not a gamer.
And we don’t fault the user for that.
Of course, everyone would get annoyed if an app took twice the time to download with a VPN service when compared to without a VPN service.
The other problem with a slowdown in streaming speeds is that they can cause severe stuttering pausing and buffering during video streaming.
The only fortunate part about this situation is that, very few iPhone VPNs actually impact download speeds to the extent that they become noticeable.
