I stay at Airbnb properties sometimes when I travel with wifi provided. This is the homeowner’s wifi. Is it possible to secure my laptop and files on wifi where the owner has the admin rights to the router and the trust level is unknown? VPN secures my connection to the internet, but I’m looking at the first link – the connection to the private wifi. I use the Public Networks setting when I connect and have turned off all shared properties. Any help is greatly appreciated. My apologies if this is off topic.

      Thank you for the feedback.
If you install the VPN service on your device then the VPN will start its work on your device.
It will encrypt your data before it leaves your device.
      So yes.
A VPN service will protect you against people who knowingly have set up malicious WiFi connections.
In fact, a good portion of all VPN users use VPN services precisely because they want to connect to insecure WiFi networks.
