IVPN Review: Price, Security, Speed, and Deals

IVPN is a small, reasonably priced VPN provider with impressive speeds and privacy measures. Based in Gibraltar, IVPN offers 77 server locations in 32 different countries. IVPN performs well in terms of security, privacy, and speed but is not as user-friendly as some of the competition at this price point.

The average price of IVPN is $72 per year, which is the cost of the IVPN Standard Plan. The IVPN Pro Plan normally costs $120 per year (there are longer and shorter-term price plans available). There is currently a sale on the IVPN website, however, reducing the Standard and Pro plans to $60 and $100 per year, respectively.

IVPN Review

The average download speed of IVPN is approximately 76 mbps, but as with all VPNs, speeds are likely to vary significantly depending on the system and server location, amongst other factors. IVPN is compatible with Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and Linux. The protocols offered with IVPN are OpenVPN, IKEv2/IPSec, and Wireguard.

IVPN, like many VPNs, aims to provide an extra level of internet security to its users. The IVPN service is often used to enable the streaming of georestricted content. Similarly, IVPN is commonly used by standard users to bypass browser or internet firewalls. Fundamentally though, IVPN is designed to enhance online security and privacy.

IVPN is not one of the most popular VPN services available, although this may change due to its competitive pricing structure. The user interface is not as user-friendly as some of the competition, however, which may be off-putting to some less computer-literature users.

What is the cost of IVPN?

An image featuring cost concept

The average price of IVPN is $72 per year for the Standard Plan, however, as mentioned above, there is currently a sale on the yearly plans, reducing this cost to $60 per year. The standard plan can also be billed at $6 per month, $2 per week, $100 per 2 years, and $140 per 3 years. The normal prices for the yearly, 2-yearly, and 3-yearly plans are $72, $144, and $216, respectively. The Pro plan currently costs $4 per week, $10 per month, $100 per year, $160 per 2 years, or $220 per 3 years. The normal prices for the yearly, 2-yearly, and 3-yearly plans are $120, $240, and $360, respectively.

When upgrading from the Standard plan to the Pro plan, users gain the ability to use the VPN on 7 devices simultaneously, rather than just 2 with the Standard plan. The pro plan also features multi-hop and port-forwarding.

This is important:

IVPN does not offer a free trial, however, IVPN does offer a 30-day money-back guarantee. Users can request a full refund within 30 days of their VPN being activated.

How much does IVPN cost per month?

IVPN costs $6 per month for the Standard plan and $10 per month for the Pro plan.

What are the deals of IVPN Service?

The following list contains the subscription deals available with IVPN.

How much does IVPN cost after 2 years?

There is no set price reduction after 24 months, however, IVPN does offer 2 and 3 yearly plans. The standard plan costs $100 per 2 years and $140 per 3 years. The pro plan costs $160 per 2 years and $220 per 3 years. IVPN, like some of the cheapest VPNs, becomes significantly cheaper when committing to over 2 years.

What are the Advantages of the IVPN?

The advantages of IVPN are listed below.

An image featuring VPN concept
  • Audited no-logging policy: online activity and information, including personally identifiable information, is not recorded by IVPN. The fact this no-logging policy has been independently audited adds an extra layer of security
  • Reasonably priced with good security: IVPN finds a good balance of cost, security features, and speed
  • Speed: for a budget VPN, IVPN produces good to download and upload speeds
  • Bitcoin support: users can pay for IVPN with bitcoin
  • 30-day money-back guarantee: users can receive a complete refund within 30 days of purchasing the VPN if they are not happy with the software

What are the disadvantages of the IVPN?

  • Slow upload speeds: while download speeds are generally very good with IVPN, upload speeds as low as 0.94 mbps have been reported with some server locations.
  • Does not unblock key streaming services: IVPN does not unblock some of the most popular streaming platforms, including Netflix, Disney+ and BBC iPlayer
  • Poor live chat availability: the live chat support is not available 24/7, and can be difficult to access even during the opening hours

How is the speed of IVPN?

An image featuring download speed concept

The average download speed of IVPN is 72 mbps and download speeds as high as 130 mbps have been recorded in some tests. Considering ExpressVPN is widely regarded as one of the fastest VPNs, with average speeds recently reported at approximately 85 mbps, IVPN performs well in this regard. VPN speeds do, however, vary greatly depending on several factors, including, but not limited to, the computing device location, ISP speed, server load, server location, encryption level, protocols used, and network type.

The upload speeds are much slower relative to the competition. For example, when connecting to the US server, upload speeds of 19 mbps were reported. When connecting to the Hong Kong server, upload speeds as low as 0.94 mbps have been reported. The average upload speed of ExpressVPN is approximately 75 mbps. See this article for a list of the quickest VPNs.

How is the security of IVPN?

An image featuring VPN on phone concept

One of the strongest overall features of IVPN is its security. IVPN secures user data with 256-bit AES encryption and has a strict no-logging policy that has been independently audited. Virus and Leak protection are excellent, protecting against DNS, IPv6, and WebRTC leaks with the firewall that is provided and automatically activated. There have been no data leaks reported at the time of writing. IVPN also has an active kill switch feature, adding a further layer of protection to users. The OpenVPN, IKEv2/IPSec, and Wireguard protocols are available for use with IVPN.

IVPN pro also provides a multi-hop feature. This means the user’s online traffic is sent through 2 VPN servers, rather than just 1, effectively adding another layer of encryption. This does, however, slow down the connection slightly. Finally, IVPN features a good anti tracker which is on par with some of the top VPNs on the market. See this article for a list of secure VPNs

What encryption technologies does IVPN use?

IVPN features industry-leading encryption technologies, including, but not limited to:

  • Military-grade AES 256-bit encryption
  • OpenVPN
  • Wireguard
  • IKEv2
  • IPSec

Pro Tip:

A good standard of encryption is essential for any VPN as this is a key feature protecting users’ information from being stolen by third parties. IVPN provides excellent encryption with the above technology.

Have there been any leaks detected for IVPN?

At the time of writing, there have been no major data leaks reported for IVPN. This is to be expected for a VPN with a good standard of security features. This is an important feature of good quality VPNs, as it provides a sense of security, implying that data leakage is unlikely to occur. On the contrary, it is a significant risk to use VPNs with a known data leak.

Does IVPN have a Kill Switch?

IVPN features a kill switch, which prevents the connection details from leaking if the VPN connection drops suddenly. This usually happens due to the internet connection suddenly dropping.  The automatic kill switch automatically disconnects the computing device there is no internet connectivity.

What are the Privacy Policies of IVPN?

An image featuring privacy policy concept

A privacy policy is an essential component of any organization that works with user data. It is important, especially from the perspective of the user, to know exactly what information is/isn’t collected by the VPN provider. A thorough privacy policy provides users with a sense of security and confidence that their data is being treated in an appropriate and lawful manner.

In general, the IVPN privacy policy is reassuring and complete. Firstly, absolutely no information is required to sign up to IVPN. IVPN does not even require an email address, which many other providers do. IVPN does not log Internet traffic, connection timestamp information, DNS requests, bandwidth usage, IP addresses, or account activity. Personally identifiable information is also never logged by IVPN. When making a payment with IVPN, the amount, currency, and payment time are recorded but account details are never recorded. Cryptocurrency and cash payments can be made.

IVPN store data in compliance with the EU Data Protection Directive and will not locate servers in countries where it is necessary to break this compliance. Because no personally identifiable information is ever stored, if IVPN data was seized it would not be possible to identify users. No third parties have access to IVPN data. When an account is deleted, all data associated with the IVPN account is deleted after 90 days.

This is important:

The IVPN privacy policy is subject to change but it is stated that “every reasonable step” will be taken to notify customers of such changes.

Does IVPN provide DNS Privacy?

An image featuring DNS privacy concept

Domain Name System (DNS) servers convert readable website addresses into IP addresses. DNS data can reveal what websites a user has visited and, as DNS data is public and sent in clear text, it is a potential route for eavesdroppers to access user information. Custom DNS servers ensure that DNS information is privatized and inaccessible to eavesdroppers.

IVPN apps do not log DNS IP addresses by default but a custom DNS is not automatically configured. It is, however, easy to customize the DNS IP address that is used by following the steps listed on the IVPN website. This process only works with OpenVPN or WireGuard Protocols though.

Can IVPN be used in China?

An image featuring China flag with a keyboard in the background

It is unclear if IVPN can be used in China, however, it must be noted that IVPN does not actively advertise or guarantee that the VPN can bypass the Chinese firewall. As some VPNs definitely work in China, it would be advisable to choose one of these if usage in China is a major priority.

Using a VPN in China appears to be a relatively common practice for both individuals and businesses alike, however, it is now technically illegal to use a VPN in China for individuals. Businesses may obtain permission from the Government to use a VPN under certain circumstances.

Does IVPN Allow P2P File-sharing?

P2P (Peer-to-Peer) file sharing is the practice of sharing digital media directly between computer systems via the internet, without going through a central server. P2P file sharing is generally a less expensive (and often completely free) and more efficient way of downloading or sharing files.

IVPN does allow P2P definition file sharing over its network, however, IVPN requests that users only do so over a non-US server. Any other server should allow P2P file sharing and torrenting.

What operating systems are compatible with IVPN?

The following operating systems are compatible with IVPN.

An image featuring operating systems concept
  • Windows
  • macOS
  • Linux
  • iOS
  • Android

This may be limiting to more advanced users. Being compatible with a longer list of operating systems provides the user with greater flexibility in their usage.

How many simultaneous connections can be created with IVPN?

With the IVPN Standard plan, 2 simultaneous connections can be created. The Pro IVPN plan allows up to 7 simultaneous connections. This allows users to use the VPN on a laptop and mobile phone simultaneously and with the Pro plan, users can share a subscription across groups or family members. The standard plan is slightly limited compared to the competition but 7 connections with the Pro plan is reasonable.

Where are the IVPN Locations?

IVPN provides 77 servers across 32 different countries. A full list of countries is listed on the IVPN website. Offering more locations means that users from different locations in the world are more likely to be able to choose a convenient location with good speeds. IVPN locations include, but are not limited to, the US, UK, Australia, Austria, Canada, Germany, Netherlands, Hong Kong, Italy, Norway, Singapore, etc.

Does IVPN have a georestriction?

IVPN does not appear to have a georestriction and allows access to geo-restricted websites. IVPN is commonly used to facilitate access to geo-restricted streaming services from countries other than their own, such as the US Netflix or BBC iPlayer.

Does IVPN have a free trial?

IVPN does not offer a free trial however it does offer a 30-day money-back guarantee. This allows users to try the software for up to 30 days and receive a full refund. IVPN also offers a reasonably priced weekly subscription to allow users to cheaply try out the VPN.

    • I would try to first make sure your VPN on the router is connected to the UK and make sure by checking here https://www.whatismyip.com/ . Make sure it says you are in the UK.

If it doesn’t then make sure you have your DNS setting of the router and the device you are using set to Google DNS

Sometimes your DNS setting can mess with your location.

Let us know if this works
