VeePN Review 2023 – Is It Secure and Fast?

When considering signing up for a virtual private network (or VPN) service, most people want to go with the big names in the industry. This isn’t always the best strategy, though. There are plenty of lesser-known VPN services that can provide you with a decent set of tools and privacy options that may better suit your needs.

VeePN is a VPN service that’s relatively new to the industry, launching in 2017. In this VeePN review, we’ll cover its main features, security and privacy capabilities, pricing, pros and cons, and more.

VeePN Review: An Overview

This is important:

For a superior and faster VPN, SecurityGladiators recommends NordVPN!

VeePN operates out of Panama, and if you go to the company’s website, you will see a list detailing the advantages of signing up with them. We’ll take a look at those in the upcoming sections, but they cover pretty much everything you would expect from a decent VPN. VeePN offers customers dedicated apps for all major platforms, including Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android. If you would like to install VeePN on your router, you can do that as well—assuming your router is capable of supporting VPNs.

Apart from that, VeePN provides its own extensions on Chrome and Firefox browsers. Each VeePN package allows users to protect 10 devices at the same time. And with 2,500 servers in 50-plus locations across 42 countries, there really isn’t a lot more you can ask from a VPN that isn’t mainstream.

With a large number of servers on par with other top VPNs in the industry, VeePN covers regions such as Europe and the United States very well. But in locations such as Africa, India and the Middle East, it falters a bit.

Each time you connect to a VeePN server, you get to take advantage of its 256-bit AES encryption.

There are also some advanced security features, such as kill switch and secure protocols such as IKEv2 and OpenVPN. The company provides users with a dedicated server for extra privacy.

For all of these features and tools, the service’s prices range from less than $2 per month to $10.99 per month, depending on how long you commit. Keep in mind that for longer packages, you will have to pay the full price of the package upfront. To further protect users’ privacy, VeePN allows payments through anonymous cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Litecoin and some others. Conventional online payment methods include PayPal, credit/debit card and Paymentwall.

You won’t find a free trial period or tier, though. Of course, as is the case with all legitimate VPN services, VeePN has a 14-day and 30-day money-back guarantee policy (depending on the package you choose).

Logging Policy

An image featuring a mac pc with logging policy and privacy concept on it

No matter how good it is, no VPN provider is worth anything to you without a good logging policy if you want privacy. (Some people only sign up for VPNs to unblock streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and BBC iPlayer instead of protecting their privacy or ensuring data security.)

On its website, VeePN says it has a zero-logs policy, under which it does not keep any connection or activity logs.

If you go to the privacy policy page, you can read more about the logging policy.

VeePN mentions it does not collect user activity logs, including browsing history, content, the final destination of the traffic or any user DNS queries. And the company doesn’t collect connection logs, meaning it doesn’t keep data about your original IP address nor does not keep any information regarding your new IP address via the VPN server. VeePN does not record connection timestamps, and it doesn’t even store session duration data.

Note:

With that said, the privacy policy page is complete enough to mention the minor logs the company does keep. These logs include minor session information, the total data a user’s web traffic used for a given session, and the date of the session.

VeePN might keep these logs to bill users who may have stepped over the company’s fair usage policy in regards to data usage per month. In addition to the above-mentioned minor logs, VeePN also keeps data about the simultaneous devices a user may have protected through their account. Keep in mind that this information is encrypted, so no one can get to its content no matter what.

Again, VeePN probably keeps this data as it has to find out the number of simultaneous connections a user has established on a given account, and the only way to do that is to keep information about it. We have reviewed enough VPN providers to know that VeePN’s privacy policy document is solid. Even top VPN services keep some data, and the way the business works, the difference between a good privacy policy and a bad policy is often the number of logs the company keeps, rather than the absence of it.

With that said, VeePN has done itself a huge favor by going through a public audit (done by cure53 as we were told by company representatives) and getting its security and privacy features checked. Other VPN services like NordVPN have done it, and the audit has proven a huge advantage for them over their competitors.

For now, though, you’ll just have to trust VeePN.

VPN Apps

An image featuring a person using his tablet while multiple secure apps are popping out of it representing VPN apps concept

You don’t need to jump over too many hoops to sign up, download and install VeePN apps. The signup process (which you have to go through if you want to use the apps for any platform) does require an email address. Once you’ve entered it, you should head straight towards the Downloads page and download the VPN app for your platform.

The whole process should be quick and painless for the vast majority of folks. In terms of the user interface, you can expect the same deal as any other good VPN. The overall design of the apps is straightforward and simple. You won’t come across options or buttons that you haven’t seen before in other VPN apps. A huge connect button on the homepage of the app will allow you to connect to the server of your choice, and the app will provide a list of available servers with the option of connecting to your Favorites list as well.

Such design choices save time. VeePN’s apps now offer an expanded Settings menu, which not only offers the standard privacy options such as protocol choice, DNS leak protection and a kill switch, but also advanced tools like auto-connect only when connecting to a new network, custom DNS servers, a malware blocker, a tracker blocker and an ad blocker. There is also an optimal server feature that, as the name suggests, quickly connects you to a server that will give you the best performance.

Another fairly useful feature is the server load indicator. It should appear for all users right beside the server location list.

For users who want to take a good look at the 2,500 servers they can connect to without being overwhelmed, this feature can be invaluable. The apps also do a terrific job of showing the user the new IP address and a system tray icon for seamlessly connecting and disconnecting.

Readers should note, though, that the Android version of the VPN app is not as accomplished. While you still get access to most of the security and privacy tools, the Android app does not show you the new IP address when you connect to a given VPN server. The Android app is also notably missing custom DNS, ad-blocker, anti-tracker and malware components. There is also no auto-connect feature.

But as a whole, the service’s apps are very usable and generally get the job done. You may have to connect to different servers a couple of times (or more) to actually get a stable connection. But that’s what separates the best VPNs from the mediocre VPNs. The best VPNs connect you the first time you try, every time.

Features

An image featuring a VPN logo with cool blue effects around it concept

All VeePN subscription packages allow users to connect 10 devices simultaneously. That is about double the industry average. Users who want protection for more devices can pay VeePN an extra $.80 per month per device, up to a total of 100 devices.

As for the connection themselves, expect them to be stable enough with the kill switch feature coming in to protect you every time your VPN connection drops for any reason. VeePN may not have the most marketed kill switch in the business but it will automatically disconnect your device from the internet most of the time when your connection does drop.

Pro Tip:

The kill switch feature used to be an extra security feature, but not anymore. With it, you can keep your personal data safe and privacy intact even when there is a connection drop. Another option that privacy-conscious users must enable is DNS leak protection.

VeePN doesn’t put a limit on the number of times you can switch between servers at a given time. While that may sound rather obvious, many VPN services have an arbitrary limit that, once reached, doesn’t allow further connections. Check any free VPN and try to connect around 20 or 30 times in a short period of time to see that you will stop connecting. With VeePN, you don’t have to worry about such problems.

Another great feature is the ability of the app to not only select a server in a given country but also select a server in a particular region of the said country. This has two advantages. You can connect to the one that is closer to your original location without sacrificing the benefits of connecting to your desired country. Secondly, if one server is not working, you can try and connect to another one to see if it works or offers better performance.

While using VeePN apps, you don’t have to worry about bandwidth either, since all packages come with unlimited bandwidth and zero data caps.

VeePN also caters to torrenters who want to transfer files using peer-to-peer (P2P) technology. If you require a special dedicated server just for your activities, VeePN offers a dedicated IP address as well. But such features are only for those who want the highest levels of privacy while not sacrificing any speed.

Security

An image featuring VPN security on laptop and on the internet concept

VeePN uses AES 256-bit encryption for all its connections, joining VPN services that only use the most secure encryption standard in the industry.

In terms of protocols, VeePN offers the following options:

  • OpenVPN
  • Smart VeePN over UDP
  • Smart VeePN over TCP
  • IKEv2
  • WireGuard
  • ShadowSocks

VeePN’s proprietary protocol comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. The apps allow you to freely change protocols on the go. You can also let it pick the best available protocol for you according to your needs.

This is important:

With that said, all beginner and intermediate VPN users should default to using the OpenVPN (and IKEv2 if you’re on iOS) protocol since it is considered the safest protocol in the industry. It’s also open-source and offers great speed.

Privacy

On the privacy front, VeePN is better than many other VPN services in the market today. To register with the service, all you have to do is provide an email address, username and password.

Since VeePN has a zero-logs policy, it doesn’t record any personal information about you.

VeePN is based in Panama, which is great for privacy since Panama is not a member of the 14 Eyes Alliance, an international intelligence-sharing agreement. Moreover, privacy experts consider Panama a fairly friendly country when it comes to protecting user privacy. There are no strict regulations or laws that force VPN services to give up user information or store personal data in the first place.

Customer Support

An image featuring two people being happy and doing their customer support job concept

VeePN provides two main ways to get in touch with them if a problem arises with your VPN: Through email or by filling out a feedback form on the company’s website.

However, if you want instant access to a company representative, there is a live chat feature as well. The live chat feature is not available at all times, though, unlike other VPN services that offer more value for money by providing a 24-7 live chat feature. That also means you’ll need to make use of the website’s support section, which offers plenty of subjects surrounding VPN services and how best to use them. There, you’ll find guides on how to set up VeePN on any of your devices.

Finally, the website also has a FAQ section that you should always check out to get your questions answered quickly, as others might have had the same problems as you.

Price

VeePN pricing plans

Currently, the company is offering three packages. All of them come with the same set of features.

This package will cost you $1.67 per month for an 85% discount on the monthly package (as of April 2023). You will have to pay the money upfront, which will come out to about $99.99.

VeePN has a 30-day money-back guarantee for the 5-year package, so you don’t have to take any risks when putting that much money on the line.

This is the base package. The signup nets you no discount, so you’ll have to pay $10.99 per month. The money-back guarantee on the 1-month package is 14 days.

For the 1-year package, you have to pay $69.99 upfront, which comes to about $5.83 per month. This nets you a neat 47% discount on the original price. Just like the 5-year package, this one also has a 30-day money-back guarantee attached.

  • iOS
  • Android
  • Windows
  • Mac
  • Linux
  • Routers

  • Fire TV
  • Chrome
  • Firefox

Speed

This is the area where VeePN tends to underperform. You can expect massive speed drops depending on which country you are connecting from and connecting to. Sometimes, VeePN servers can drop speeds up to 60%.

In our experience, servers located in the U.K. provided better speeds and ping times than servers in the U.S. But again, the actual speeds will depend on the countries used as test connections. With servers in 50 locations across 42 countries, you do have a lot of options.

As for ping times, ours went from 2ms to over 300 ms for U.K. servers and over 500 ms for U.S. servers. Good VPN providers can restrict that to around 50 ms.

Pro Tip:

You can always try and mitigate that problem by connecting to a server that’s close to you or in a different location.

What About Streaming?

VeePN generally works with US Netflix. However, there is no guarantee that a VPN working with US Netflix (or any other streaming service) today will work tomorrow as well. VeePN will let you consume geo-restricted Kodi content. Expect it to work with BBC iPlayer or Amazon Prime Video. Just keep in mind that no VPN service can guarantee that it will always continue to work with US Netflix, Amazon Prime Video or any of the many streaming services.

Pros

  • Zero logs
  • Unlimited bandwidth
  • DNS leak protection
  • 30-day money-back guarantee
  • Advanced security features
  • Good encryption
  • Good platform support
  • Based in Panama, a privacy-friendly country
  • Decent server network
  • 10 simultaneous connections
  • Live chat

Cons

  • Slow
  • Kill switch can malfunction at times

Can 2023 VeePN Overcome Kill Switch Problems with Extra Features Like DNS Leak Protection & Simultaneous Connections?

VeePN will not answer all the questions troubling you about your privacy and security on the internet. But it is improving rapidly. If you can look past the sometimes-unreliable kill switch feature and slower VPN servers, VeePN can be a decent service for you.

And if you want a solid VPN at the lowest price possible, it is very hard to beat the five-year VeePN plan. In terms of value for money, it’s an excellent deal.
