CyberGhost Review

CyberGhost is a Romanian based company and an emerging market leader in the provision of VPN services. CyberGhost VPN guarantees total web anonymity, unlimited bandwidth and hundreds of servers to bypass censorship in different parts of the world. The No log policy and strong encryption even for their free VPN version is another reason why CyberGhost is a brand to reckon with.

CyberGhost FeaturesCyberGhost VPN offers various attractive features that will definitely hook you up to their service.  First is their user-friendly VPN client, which is easy to use with power customization. CyberGhost works smoothly with major operating systems including Windows Mac and Linux. It is also compatible with iOS, android, DDWRT Routers among a host of other devices.

CyberGhost has a free version for basic users and a Premium VPN package for advanced users. Both plans guarantee unlimited bandwidth, unlimited traffic, and AES 256bit encryption to protect your web Identity. Premium users enjoy unlimited Server access and server switching, but free users have to do with a handful of servers. Free users get disconnected after every 6 hours – but you can reconnect as many times as possible.

CyberGhost allows up to five simultaneous connections for Premium plus users and other benefits such as a variety of VPN protocols which include PPTP, L2TP, and OpenVPN. In general, both Premium and Premium Plus users enjoy the same benefits only that Premium users are limited to one connection per account.

CyberGhost ServersThe availability and location of VPN servers is another critical area to consider when looking for a VPN. Preferably, go for a VPN provider with numerous servers in non-cooperative jurisdictions where the Law does not force companies to hand over customers’ data on demand. Providers with very few VPN servers are more likely to impact on your connection speed due to congestion on their servers.

CyberGhost has over 500 VPN servers spread in more than 30 strategic countries including East Asia and Oceania. Premium users enjoy unlimited servers access but free users are restricted only to a handful of servers. All the same, free users can utilize servers in locations such the United States to unlock many geo-restricted sites outside the US. CyberGhost also allows you unlimited server switching, at any time.

The ultimate upload and download speed of a VPN is the ultimate deal-breaker. Basically, all VPNs have a considerable impact on speed depending on the security protocols used and the level of encryption. It’s perfectly normal to expect at least a 15-20 percent drop in internet speed once you start using a VPN. All the same, go for a provider with minimum impact on your internet speed.

Our speed tests on CyberGhost returned encouraging results. It’s worth noting that CyberGhost VPN has fairly fast speed even for free users. Using a 30mbs connection, CyberGhost reduced our download speed by approximately 20% and had very minimal impact on the Uploads speed. CyberGhost VPN premium users enjoy relatively stable speeds with very few drop-outs.

Pricing and Packages

CyberGhost PricesCyberGhost offers three pricing packages which include a free plan, a premium plan, and a Premium Plus plan. The Premium plan costs $5.83 per month billed annually or $6.99 billed monthly, while the Premium Plus plan costs $9.16 per month billed annually or $10.99 on a monthly basis. The Premium Plus is as good as the Premium plan but allows up to 5 simultaneous connections using one account, which means you can use a VPN on 5 of your devices at the same time with the very same account. All annual subscriptions come with a 30 days money-back guarantee period while the monthly subscriptions attract a 14 days trial period, fair enough we believe.

Protocols and Encryption

The security of a VPN is a key factor to consider before settling for a VPN service.  A strong Virtual tunnel technology coupled with the right encryption determines the safety and overall performance of your VPN. CyberGhost supports the following VPN protocols PPTP, L2TP, IPsec, and OpenVPN. CyberGhost does not support SSTP, SSL and SSH protocols due to their perceived impact on internet Speed.

Encryption in VPNs is employed at different levels ranging from a weak 128 bits to a 1024 bits military-grade encryption. By default, Cyber Ghost offers 256 bits AES end-to-end encryption over OpenVPN for all its packages, including the free CyberGhost VPN.

Logging Policy

Always read through your service provider’s privacy policy and understand their Logging Policy, prior to accepting the terms and conditions. Some providers promise total web anonymity but still keep a log of your online activities which contradicts the “exact” reason you’re using a VPN. Preferably, choose a VPN provider who does not keep logs and is not known to collaborate with authorities to subvert user’s privacy.

CyberGhost does not keep any personally identifiable logs, web addresses or monitor your online activities in any way. Without the logs, even a court order to hand in users’ data is useless because the data does not exist in the first place, makes sense? Furthermore, the company regularly publishes a transparency report detailing any received requests to hand customers’ data.

CyberGhost CompatibilityIf you’re looking for a VPN to use on multiple devices and across various Operating systems then go for CyberGhost! The VPN is a one-stop-shop in terms of device compatibility. It runs smoothly on all major operating systems including Windows, Mac, and Linux. CyberGhost has a user-friendly VPN client software to use with your windows, iOS, and Android smartphones. CyberGhost is also compatible with Nokia devices, DDWRT Routers, Tomato routers among others.

Customer Support

VPN technology is in itself complicated and first-time users may require help to set up the connection, resolve compatibility issues and troubleshoot network problems.  CyberGhost offers Round-the-clock customer support through their website. Their Live Chat feature is active during typical US business hours taking only a few minutes to connect to a real person. CyberGhost VPN is well documented in the knowledge base feature using well-outlined topics and a powerful search function. The FAQ segment offers great insight into the functionality of the CyberGhost VPN.

If you’re looking for reliability in service delivery then CyberGhost is the VPN to Choose. With CyberGhost you get to enjoy the same quality of service you paid for, throughout all your subscription period. Their VPN upload and download speed are always stable with few down-times for Premium users. CyberGhost also guarantees the security of your data through an ever-active encryption mode.

Payment Methods

Diversity, convenience, and flexibility in payment methods is of utmost importance to any business. It is useless having a good VPN that does not accept the most convenient method of payment. CyberGhost accepts payment through a variety of internationally accepted secure payment methods including Bitcoin, Wire Transfers, American Express, Visa, MasterCard, JCB, and PayPal.

Pros in a nutshell:

  • Do not keep logs
  • Strong encryption even for free users.
  • Unlimited Bandwidth for all packages.
  • Diverse payment methods including Bitcoin.
  • Very affordable premium packages.

Cons in a nutshell:

  • Have a great impact on Download Speed.
  • Limits torrent downloading for Free users.
  • Free users get disconnected after every 6 hours.

Finally, we conclude our review after carefully reviewing the strengths and weaknesses of the VPN service. It goes without saying that CyberGhost has more strengths than the weak points. The VPN scores highly in terms of pricing, VPN server availability, Strong encryption, device compatibility, and customer support. That notwithstanding, CyberGhost should do something about their download speeds and probably allow more VPN servers for free users. In a nutshell, CyberGhost is a brilliant and reliable VPN service worth trying.

  1. I like the features that you have mentioned on this article. I’ve been using FrootVPN whenever I travel and I can connect to it easily with fast speed and more server locations available. I can also say that it’s quiet cheaper.

    • Thank you for the feedback Kate.
We’re glad you had a great experience with FrootVPN.
If you want to change your VPN service provider without spending any money then you can always try out free trials and money-back guarantees of other VPN services just to check them out.

  2. Hello, I’ve premium account and the Android app doesn’t work for me at all for over a week and over mobile data only. I’ve tried all mobile operators in uk, different devices, uninstalled it on and off several times, reset network settings several times, and the same messages comes up all the time which says that the app cannot connect. Tech support keep repeating the same every day, and every day they are saying that they will make an escalation and they never do. That’s in my opinion is hilarious as these people just copy paste some sentences from somewhere and aren’t bothered to help at all. So please AVOID CYBERGHOST if you value your privacy on the go and over mobile data as it just not going to work, help will never come, nor you will be provided with solutions or when the problem it should be fixed. Best

    • Thank you for your comment.
We’re sorry you had a bad experience with CyberGhost.
You have a couple of options at this point.
Contact their customer support and ask for your money back if you are eligible for their money-back guarantee.
Two, you can try to ride it out a bit.
Running a VPN service is a complex business.
Hence, most VPN services run into problems from time to time.
      Eventually, they improve.
So your last option is to be patient. See if they improve.
      If they don’t, don’t re-subscribe.
