Netflix is undoubtedly one of the best Video streaming sites in the world today. As a top rated online movie store Netflix offers a variety of award-winning movies, documentaries and TV series round the clock. Unfortunately, due to some issues of Geo-blocking Netflix is only available in the US and partly in Canada and UK. Even Canadian and Britons enjoy only a fraction of what US Netflix subscribers have.
To start off, Geo-blocking is an offensive system that discriminates internet access based on geo-locations or geo-blocks. As an example, this implies you cannot use the BBC iPlayer outside the UK or enjoy Australia ABC iView outside Australia. Similarly, the US version of Netflix will lock you out immediately you step outside of the America.
In this case, the only way to access Netflix outside US is to bypass the Geo-restrictions commonly known as geo-dodging. In itself, geo-dodging is a Legal grey area with the primary international laws silent on the issue. Legal issues aside, there are numerous ways to bypass geo-restrictions and Location errors. You could either use a VPN, SmartDNS proxy or browser plugin such as ZenMate as we discussed in our Europe Netflix article.
What do I need to get a US Netflix account outside the US?
Getting a US Netflix account while being outside the US is pretty straightforward. You only need to mask your device IP address with a virtual US IP address, to make look like you are requesting access to Netflix from the United States. In general, ensure you have the following;
- Subscribe to reliable premium VPN services such as NordVPN or StrongVPN and ExpressVPN with quality VPN servers based in the US.
- Have a PayPal Account or a credit card accepted in the US such as Visa or MasterCard.
- Have Netflix compatible devices such as PS3, PC or smart TV with a working internet connection preferably above 8mbs (for best Netflix video streaming experience).
Proceed below for detailed info on the highlights above:
Step 1: Obtain a US IP address
Netflix uses your device IP address to tell your geo-location and, therefore, lock you out from accessing their service. Subscribing to a reliable VPN service such as NordVPN (our recommended VPN for Netflix) gives your device a US IP address which is compatible with the Netflix. NordVPN routes your internet traffic through a US VPN server so that to Netflix, your internet traffic is seen to emanate from the same location as your VPN server (the America, because you’d be choosing and connecting to a US server among many being provided by NordVPN).
What we liked the most about it is, besides having hundreds of servers in strategic locations, NordVPN is fast, reliable and offers around the clock customer supports. It is also easy to use – having a user-friendly VPN client software for Widows, Mac and Linux based operating systems, as well as all mobile devices. Visit NordVPN.com, sign up for an account, then download and Install the VPN client Software. Lastly, configure your VPN to route traffic through a US based VPN server. That’s it; you should have a valid US IP by now.
Step 2: Obtain a US Virtual Credit Card
To subscribe to a US Netflix account abroad, you must have a credit card which is accepted in the US or a PayPal account to complete the payment step (which is the last and most important one). Well, not everybody has a PayPal account, and the chances are that Netflix won’t accept your non-US credit card. In this case, you need an Entropay virtual Visa credit card which is compatible with Netflix.
Entropay is a US based firm partnering with Visa to issue a US virtual credit card, which is verifiable with a credit card number and an expiration date. In case you don’t own a US credit card and don’t have a US Paypal either, you will need the Entropay card number to sign up for a US Netflix Account.
At this point, Visit Entropay.com, sign up for an Entropay account and top up your new Entropay account using your non-US credit card. Afterwards, Entropay will only take a few minutes to generate a Virtual Visa card which has a valid card Number, an Expiration date and security code.
Below is snapshot of our Entropay Virtual card for you to have a look (we censored our private details):
Step 3: Sign UP for US Netflix
Once you have a working VPN, a US accepted card number and, at least, $8.99 a month to spare then you are ready to start your free month of video streaming with Netflix. Follow the following steps to sign up for a Netflix Account.
- Visit Netflix.com and click on Start Membership.
- Select membership plan, enter your email address and password then Click
- On the Next screen, select your payment method, either PayPal or Credit Card.
- If you chose the Credit card, enter your Payment details including your real names. Here, enter your Entropay card details and any valid US zip. You can search for US zip codes from the internet if you don’t have one.
- Lastly, Click on Start membership to claim your free month of the US version of Netflix. Note, Netflix will only deduct payment from your credit card after the expiry of the one-month trial period. No money will be deducted if you cancel your membership before then.
In a nutshell, we just explained an easy way to sign up for a US Netflix account using a VPN and an Entropay Virtual credit card – while a person actually is outside the US. Note; there also are other methods to obtain a virtual US IP address such as using a SmartDNS service or Browser plugin (Hola and ZenMate.com to name a couple). Apart from SmartDNS and free extensions like Hola and Zenmate being told here already, you can use Netflix proxy as well. However, using VPN is by far the most secure way to unblock Netflix no matter wherever someone is.
Notably, a VPN encrypts your internet traffic to secure your online safety while traversing the Word wide web. Other methods like SmartDNS do not encrypt your traffic, and therefore, they expose you to online threats such as DNS hijacking and eavesdropping by malicious actors on the Web. As mentioned above, NordVPN is one of the fastest and reliable VPN services to fulfill your need of unblocking the US version of Netflix outside it. Other great VPNs worth trying include ExpressVPN and StrongVPN.
Lastly, the article only discusses how to sign up for Netflix using a virtual credit card. Alternatively, using PayPal is another brilliant way to pay for Netflix while outside of the US. You might want to get some help from our how to get Netflix without a credit card guide, if you’re stuck with the payment thing and are not able to get your Netflix account even after reaching this end of the article. Note: After changing your IP address via the VPN or any other tool like SmartDNS, proxy or free extensions to get to any country’s Netflix version.
